Is Your Business Set Up to Grow Without Everything Coming Back to You?
Growth can look great from the outside while becoming harder and harder to manage behind the scenes. More clients. More work. More people. More decisions. And somehow, more of it still ends up on your desk.
Use this quick assessment to see whether your business is actually taking work off your plate—or simply giving you more to manage.
1. Communication
[ ] Everyone knows where important information belongs. Your team isn't searching through email, texts, chats, and different platforms to find the latest information.
[ ] People know what needs your immediate attention. Not every question is treated like an emergency, and you aren't constantly being interrupted throughout the day.
[ ] You don't have to hold everything together through meetings. Your team can stay informed and on track without needing another meeting every time something changes.
2. How the Work Gets Done
[ ] New people can learn the job without you teaching every step. Someone joining the team can find what they need and understand how the work is done without requiring hours of your time.
[ ] Work doesn't get stuck when it moves from one person to another. The information, instructions, and next steps needed to keep a project moving are easy to find.
[ ] The business can keep moving when someone is unavailable. If a team member, contractor, or software tool suddenly disappeared, someone else could step in without starting from scratch.
3. Your Time
[ ] Your team can make routine decisions without coming to you. People know what they can handle on their own and when they really need your input.
[ ] You're not spending your week doing work someone else could handle. Routine administrative and operational tasks aren't taking up the time you need to run and grow the business.
[ ] You have time to think about the business, not just work in it. Your calendar gives you regular time to look ahead, make decisions, and deal with issues before they become emergencies.
What Your Score Means
7–9 boxes checked: Your business is doing a good job of supporting its current level of growth. You may still have areas to improve, but your day-to-day operations aren't entirely dependent on you.
6 or fewer boxes checked: Your business may be growing faster than the way you work can support. You may be answering the same questions repeatedly, fixing problems that should have been handled without you, explaining the same processes to different people, or becoming the place where every decision eventually lands.
Adding more people or more software won't necessarily solve that. Sometimes, the problem isn't that you need more help. The way the work is organized needs to change.
